I am so happy you posted Mrs. Riso's recipe today. My Mom always made a similar cake and she called it the OLD MAN cake. In short I do not have any of my Mom's old recipe cards but this sure looks like the recipe. I think she used less sugar and less flour and told me once it was an old WWII recipe when sugar and flour were scarce. It did not rise very much in her bread size pan. I could not wait for this to cool so she could cut me a piece after a high school football game in the Fall. I am definitely going to make this. THANK YOU! You made my day:) Joyce
Thanks for telling us what the heck "Spry" is ! We are making an old recipie for Bannana Nut Cake today and it's recipie calls for that ingredient, we were stumped!
As a lover of all things vintage, I write about our cottage home, inspirational decorating, vintage finds, thrifty buys, and old-time recipes. I have many additional interests such as reading, writing, blogging, arts and crafts, and quilting...I write about these interests as well as about family, friends, shelties, nature and hobbies.
3/4 cup Spry??
ReplyDeleteThese are so fun, it makes me want to redo my recipes the old fashioned way.

That...is a very different recipe, the process of it all, I mean. To boil first, then add the dry ingredients.
ReplyDeleteYum!
ReplyDeleteI have never met a spice cake I didn't like, so I'm quite sure I'll like this one too! Has anyone figured out a substitute for the Spry yet?
ReplyDeleteCarol, You can use any shortening instead of the Spry. Crisco is often used but whatever you have at home will work!
ReplyDeleteI'll have more "Spry" recipes for that was the shortening used most during the 50's and 60's!
Have a fabulous day!

Yum....my favourite!
