Christmas Memories of Double Fudge Cakes!

Childhood's Day
How I remember Saturdays
In the days long gone by,
When Mother in the kitchen
Was baking bread and pie.

How anxiously I waited
For the bread and pie to bake,
Then Mother took a mixing bowl
And began the chocolate cake.

She beat the eggs and sugar well
And added other things,
Then with a big spoon stirred it
Till the batter stood in rings.

The batter looked delicious
As she placed it in the pan,
Then set the bowl on the table...
That's when our fun began.

I remember as though 'twere yesterday
How my mother, gentle soul,
Would smile and look at me and say,
"Now you can lick the bowl."

(The Childhood's Day poem by Lillian Burns Hudson and
chocolate cake photo were found in a 1964 Ideals recipe book.)

I love this poem as it brings back memories of my own mother baking in the kitchen nearly every day...and especially as the Christmas season approached. Bread was daily fare in our house. But goodies like double chocolate cakes were often in the oven when I arrived home from school or came bounding in from playing outdoors.

"Don't walk too heavily," Mom would exclaim. I'd kick my shoes off and tip-toe silently through the kitchen and into the dining room all the while thinking how good that chocolate cake was going to taste!

And how many of you remember your mom smiling and saying, "Now you can lick the bowl"?

The memories and scents of baked goods linger long! The cinnamons, sugars, and frosting fine mix with the fragrance of boughs of pine as holly and gingerbread help fill the house with sweet smells of happiness and Christmas joy! Were there ever better moments than these?

(The Double Fudge Cake and Nut Fudge Frosting recipes, as always,
were provided long ago by the lovely and generous church ladies of the 1950's.)
